Inverting an iPhone’s colors can be useful for a few different reasons, though its primary function is to reduce eye strain from staring at a screen, as well as helping with glare while out in the sun. It’s not a feature that many are privy to, which has left many unfamiliar with where to find it. Of course, it’s possible to accidentally invert an iPhone’s colors too, so some may just be looking to turn it off.

How to Invert iPhone Colors in iOS

There are two different types of color inversion that iPhone users can toggle, both with some major differences. To find the options, go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Display & Text Size. From there, scroll down about halfway through the menu. The options to invert the iPhone’s colors will begin right below “Differentiate Without Color.”

Smart Invert

The first option is Smart Invert, which reverses the colors of the display in most circumstances, the exceptions being for images, media, and certain apps that use dark mode. This is the option that most iPhone users are going to want to use, as there are situations, specifically with images, where inverted colors are a detriment rather than a benefit.

Classic Invert

The other option is Classic Invert, which completely reverses the colors of the iPhone’s display. Classic Invert doesn’t have any exceptions for images or apps, so once it’s turned on everything will be switched.

It’s also possible to bind inverted colors to the side button, allowing users to enable and disable the feature rapidly. To do so, go to the Accessibility Shortcuts menu in the Accessibility setting sub-menu. Turn it on, and then the triple-click toggle will be enabled. All of the options can be easily found in the search menu, too, keeping it easy to find.

That’s all it takes to invert colors on iPhones in iOS. The feature can come in handy while out in the sun or reducing eyestrain, which in turn helps with migraines and blurred vision.
