Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is billed as a back-to-basics “re-imagining” of the long-running FPS franchise, with a renewed focus on authentic, gritty tactical combat scenarios. This philosophy has also been extended into the game’s multiplayer suite, best exemplified in the new two-versus-two Gunfight mode, which assigns players a random loadout for each round and ends when both players from one side are dead.

The new mode is the focus of an upcoming open alpha, which will allow COD players on PlayStation 4 the opportunity to check out 2v2 combat for themselves. Here’s how to join the Modern Warfare open alpha.

How to Join the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2v2 Alpha

Announced at the Gamescom convention in Germany on Monday, the multiplayer alpha for the new Modern Warfare begins Friday, August 23 at 10 a.m. PDT and runs through Sunday, August 25.

The alpha is free to everyone—no Call of Duty pre-order required—but will only be available to PS4 players. Players can begin preloading the alpha on August 22. Best of all: no PlayStation Plus subscription will be required to join the Alpha. All you need is a PS4 and an internet connection to check out the new Gunfight multiplayer mode coming to Modern Warfare.

To preload the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare alpha, check out the PlayStation Store beginning August 22, when the trial will be available for preload. Searching “Modern Warfare” or “Gunfight” will turn up the Call of Duty trial alpha, should it not be readily available on the storefront.

Players signed up for the multiplayer alpha will be able to play in 2v2 mode on five different Modern Warfare maps: Stack, King, Pine, Speedball, and Docks. Multiple Operators will be available for players to try out, while at least one game mode variant (called Pickup) is expected alongside the basic 2v2 Gunfighter deathmatch, in which each player only has a single life.

On their official blog, Call of Duty publisher Activision also described “a number of other surprises,” with content added to the alpha throughout the weekend.

While the upcoming Modern Warfare alpha will focus on 2v2 combat, the full game will have much larger matches, including 32-versus-32 team deathmatch. Some multiplayer rounds will feature more than one hundred players on a single map. A more expansive Beta for Modern Warfare will be held on all platforms in September.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releases October 25 on PlayStation, Xbox One and PC.
